Many of us are woefully uninformed about the history of countries like Czechoslovakia. In 1968 I was a college student protesting the war in Vietnam. On August 20th of that year Soviet led Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czechoslovakia to crack down on reform policies in Prague. The Velvet Revolution / Gentle Revolution, a non-violent transition of power, did not happen until 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government combined students and older dissidents. The result was the end of 41 years of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia. The "Burning Bush" tells the story of one young dissident who set himself on fire in January of 1969 to protest the loss of his country's independence and was then declared an unintelligent, suicidal malcontent by the government. This is Jan Palach's story and that of his family, fellow student protesters, and the attorneys who attempted to clear his name. Often people have to wait for freedom or justice, but the desire for it never dies. Sad, but inspiring story. Kristi & Abby Tabby

During the Cold War, Czechoslovakia had a government a tad independent of the USSR. The film deals with the threat of a complete USSR takeover of Czechoslovakia. OK, now I got an item off my bucket list – the one that says I needed to write the Czech word twice in a film comment. This is a great 4 hour mini-series that aired on the European HBO network (what percent of Americans even know such a channel exists?) What happened in 1969 to lawyers, students, citizens when they took the governments of Czech and USSR to court?

It was a good movie but I missed a good part of the visuals while reading the sub titles. Not being a foreign film purist I wish they would dub some of these films or at least give you the option.
