Heavy/dark subject that has been carried well by the main actors.

A beautiful, sad, realistic Belgian movie. Extraordinary bluegrass music and very good acting. The story is not a happy one. It's about coping with death of a child and it's about choices that we make and our believes. It carries a political message as well, but it's up to you to take it in or not. Well done!

It was OK if you like soap operas. Way too melodramatic for me. The lead actor performance was over-the-top. Cliches by the boatload. The music was good but your time would be better spent listening to three good bluegrass records.

For a fresh angle on American identity, spend some time with this Flemish film. I enjoyed the performances, particularly the lovely Veerle Baetens as Elise. If I was unconvinced by the final sequences, which relied a little too much on melodrama and film techniques, there’s an important message about the danger of confusing a nation’s popular culture with the policies of its government. America comes to mean something very different than cowboys, bluegrass and Elvis; it comes under criticism for the policies of one president in the early 2000s. What begins as a celebration of Americana turns into a condemnation of American policies.

I will be adding this movie to my favorite movies list. I loved it although, or perhaps because it was so sad. It was a realistic story of a couple who are not perfect and who do not lead the perfect life. The music was superb. I recommend this movie highly.

A story of two people with an intense and passionate love that is tested when tragedy strikes. Each one dealing with their grief in different and conflicting ways.

A great mix of romance, Bluegrass Music as played by Dutch musicians, parenthood, cancer, grief, evolution, and spirituality – all presented with flashbacks, flashforwards, imagination, and even a bit of magical realism and a kick in the butt to America’s evangelical regression to anti-science days brought to you by “W.” Oscar nomination for best foreign language film of the year.

This was a 112 minute film version of a cliched tragic country western song. It's the story of a Flemish country western singer and his life. The woman dies, the child dies, a bird dies, no doubt other innocent creatures meet an early demise. My response to this film was anger - anger that I invested any time or emotional energy in it. But the music was well done...

Elise to Didier: If I want to believe that Maybelle is a star up in the sky, I will.
If I want to believe she's a bird that perches on our window sill, or a butterfly that sits on my shoulder or a bloody frog that...

Didier (flash back explaining to Maybelle): It's a sun that is a very, very long way away. And its light has to travel a long way for a long time to reach your eyes. So sometimes it's possible that the little star has already gone out before the light reaches your eyes. So you see something that is no longer there.
But that doesn't matter, because the light from a little star like that carries on travelling, past your eyes. Further and further.
So that little star will exist forever.
Forever and ever and ever.
