Hailey McEwan has many interests--soccer, field hockey, animation. She'd probably never have started singing if her best friend, Crissy, hadn't persuaded her to take singing lessons and join her choir. No one had any idea that Hailey would be such a natural, least of all Hailey herself. A shared love of music--from pop to opera--has been a big part of the girls' friendship, but when the two face off in a competition for a role in a production of The Marriage of Figaro , their closeness turns into a bitter rivalry. Hailey will have to make a tough decision. Is opera as important to her as it is to Crissy? And is landing a role worth losing her best friend?

High Note by Jeff Ross is about Hailey McEwan, a 17 year old who wants to be a singer. Her best friend, Crissy, is also a great singer. However, when a big role in Marriage of Figaro, Barbarina, is put up for casting, Crissy puts singing before friendship. Being best friends quickly turns into a tense rivalry. High Note is an easy and quick read. I liked how it was easily understandable, since I’m sure everyone has experienced rivalry of some sort, whether it be a big role like a role in an opera or just seeing who will do better on a spelling test. Something else I liked about it was it used small problems that were relatable, like how people are willing to cheat to help them win. However, something I disliked was how the book felt cut off. The end seemed as if the story could keep on progressing, but for some reason it ended early. Despite that, I think that the ending was okay, setting aside the fact of it feeling cut off. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a light, quick and easy read. Rating: 3.5/5.
