in the tradition of Chaucer and Boccaccio, and inspired by the thought of Nietzsche and the tone of Marcel Proust, Pasolini takes de Sade through several of Dante's circles of hell - sets recall Ingres, Velazquez and de Chirico among others, music by Chopin, Bach, among again others - an utter masterpiece, but not for the squeamish
