One sunny day Samson, a large and friendly woolly mammoth, encounters a little red bird who is looking for yellow flowers for her mouse friend (whose favorite color is yellow). As she flies off with the flowers, Samson wonders what it must be like to have a friend. He wonders this for so long, in fact, that he falls asleep and wakes up to a world covered in snow. In the midst of a blizzard, Samson finds and shelters the little red bird and flower-loving mouse in a tender tale of kindness and unexpected friendship.

Stead characteristically offers a warmth of character throughout the journey of this book: new friendship, perseverance, and the beauty of small acts of kindness. You will be charmed by the heart of these creatures, both great and small.

Stead delivers another incredible story full of heart. Follow Samson, a lonely woolly mammoth, as he journeys through a snowy blizzard to ensure a little red bird is safe. A heartwarming story of love and newfound friendship. Readers will want to give Samson the biggest hug!

Nice calm bedtime book with wonderful illustrations that invoke the feelings of kindness and friendship of Stead's earlier award winner "A Sick Day for Amos McGee". Great for cuddling up with after hot chocolate on a cold winter bedtime. I wouldn't be surprised if this book garnered picture book awards or a least nominations.
