Fairy tale like bucolic setting with the harsh village life of strong women and supportive or not men. The characters are excellent, the children beautiful, the philosophical message interesting and realistic.

A gorgeous film about a mother and daughter and a small town over the course of a lifetime.

Not for everyone, but for me, it hit it out of the ballpark! The movie shows the life of one woman from a child to the day she passes on. Nothing in her life is left out. I loved her family and especially Antonia. The movie is a thing of beauty and inspiration. Hope you enjoy as much as I did!

I had high hopes about this movie. But it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. It is somewhat surrealistic and yes it is entertaining but missing a strong story line.

I love this movie! I first saw it on TVO many years ago and again a few years later. I was thrilled when the HPL finally got a copy of the dvd!

strength, sadness, love, patience, sex, philosophy, birth, death, vengeance, humour - a wonderful mix of life in a small Dutch farm community starting in 1945.

A good movie, though not for watchers who prefer to believe life doesn't have its dull moments, its moments of pain, its moments of raw lust and savagery.

We very much enjoyed watching this DVD that had English subtitles. We would class it as R rated for two very graphic sexual incidents.

Number *ONE* on my Best movies list: movies about strong women. But also, fine film-making. Any film studies student should not miss this film. Women's Studies and teen girls. Great narrative, funny, galvanizing story of women's diversity and survival.
