“I wanted her to be delighted with me, but I didn't succeed. I can't understand it. It's true I've always detested her and that, before her marriage, I went to great lengths to prevent it…” I loved this movie because it shows just how funny Jane Austen can be, which is a hard thing to get people ... Too many characters that I do not care about, and too much chatter between them. Kate Beckinsale should have stuck to the "Underworld" movies because at least then she was interesting.

If you remember the 90s (Well, then you weren't there man! Oh wait, that's the 60s.), you remember that the hottest author for a while was one who'd been dead for over a century and a half. We saw adaptations of "Pride and Prejudice," "Emma" (Three versions!), "Persuasion," "Sense & Sensibility," and "Mansfield Park." She has a small body of work (6 novels), but filmmakers are still finding inspiration from her work. Whit Stillman's generically titled "Love & Friendship" is an adaptation of a short early novel called "Lady Susan," which was published posthumously. Stillman's films are all comedies of manners ("Metropolitan," "Barcelona"), so it's unsurprising that he'd be drawn to Austen. I love Austen, but I rarely love her movies, which too often miss the sharp, satiric tone of her work. "Love & Friendship" is a typical Austen adaptation in that it's pretty, well-acted, and a little dull. Kate Beckinsale as Lady Susan gives one her most robust, funniest performances in years and is the best thing about the film. Chloe Sevigny co-stars and this is a reunion of sorts, as the two actors co-starred in Stillman's best film, "The Last Days of Disco." Enjoyable enough and much better than his tone deaf and excruciating previous film "Damsels in Distress."

Sadly awful. I expected better. Exceedingly boring. Because the novel was published when Jane Austen was very young, it is lacking in the character and style that we love about her. The movie is a disappointment.

Novelist Jane Austen + Director Whit Stillman = witty and winning combination! If you don't like Jane Austen, you won't like this, but if you do, don't miss it! It's based on Austen's novella, Lady Susan, and although, admittedly, it is not Austen's best work, it still offers up the sharp but accurate Austen commentary on just how silly, virtuous, obtuse, and generous human beings can be. I especially enjoyed the the reunion of Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny, who made Stillman's "The Last Days of Disco" so memorable. If you like smart dialogue, period pieces, and a bit of romance, try this! Then follow it up with full Stillman treatment: Metropolitan, Barcelona, and The Last Days of Disco.

Enjoyable film about scheming, class and marriage.

Although a clever adaptation of Jane Austen's "Lady Susan," it gets to be rather slow at parts, and the pacing is not always sharp. To be honest, I think that Austen's first novel wasn't fit to be adapted into a movie, because it highlights the pitfalls in her early writing. It had an excellent cast, but I don't know that they had a lot to work with.

Not terrible, but tedious.

There is some very witty dialogue. As Jemma Redgrave said, the story seems more like Fielding than Austen.

This is beyond a doubt the most idiotic, useless, and boring movie I ever tried to watch. It is NEVER clever. It has excellent actors in it, but they are wasted in a movie that is a waste of time. Don't bother.

This was a delightfully witty movie and I thought it was well done as it was based on a book of letters. The dialogue was hilarious and watching Lady Susan work the room. She is a piece of work and she gets what she wants.
