I was skeptical at the start, but this turned out to be a very sweet story. Humor interlaced throughout, bringing some levity to serious and sad topics, particularly in the beginning. Glad that I listened to the audiobook so I could hear the correct pronunciation of some of the characters' names!

This has reinforced why I never give up on a book. This had a very slow beginning, and I was thinking to myself how much longer do I need to listen to this. About midway through, the book definitely redeemed itself and I didn't want it to end. I thought there was great character development. Would highly recommend.

This was one of the best books I've listened to recently. The narrator's voice worked for me as Ove's story unfolded and he uses an excellent amount of gruffness when Ove speaks. Not to mention the story is beautiful.

Pretty good, lots of warm fuzzies. Was somewhat predictable, and didn't love as much as many others do, but the story is like a warm bubble bath, so who cares if it's a little predictable.

I laughed, I rolled my eyes, I smirked, I cried. This book took me all through the spectrum of emotions. Ove (OO-vuh) is just your typical, aging, recently-widowed man that is struggling to move forward with life after losing his wife of nearly 40 years. A total grump & a man who is SET in his ways (aka the only RIGHT way), the people around him have difficulties getting close or even interacting with him. But along comes an unlikely, young neighbor woman & her husband & children that will slowly give Ove reason to keep on living. This book builds his character so well that I feel that if I were to meet the man in real-life, I would know Ove as a personal friend. I would throw my arms around Parvaneh, the neighbor woman, & thank her for having a heart that could see a man & need & never give up until she broke through his tough shell.

Age recommendation: 14 & over (occasional profanity)

On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 8.

I borrowed this on a friend's recommendation, and was pleasantly surprised! It was such a lovely story that will have you in tears more than once!

This was an entertaining and somewhat insightful book, part humorous, and then quite serious. To put it plainly, it is the story of a man who has the social skills of a mole. He absolutely does not get along with his fellow man. He further believes absolutely in rules and they are to be obeyed without exception. He comes from a very strange background in which his father always respected him, but probably spoke no more than 15 words to him growing up. He marries a wonderful woman who is full of life and spontaneity, which seems like an impossibility with his demeanor, but surprisingly, they make a wonderful couple and he is devoted to her.

The story plain and simple is all about Ove, his absolute lack of social graces and skills interacting with a group of people who slowly come into his life. What they find is that once you get past the absolute gruff and miserable outer shell, there is a very endearing and caring man (in his own way) underneath it all. It is a life adventure about the events that confront them, how they become friends and finally bind together to be an awkward but determined family of sorts.

As I began, this was an enjoyable book with some humorous parts, some emotional parts, and then just delightful reading. If you are in between books and haven't come across anything that really grabs you, this book is a nice filler.

I enjoyed watching Ove change from churlish and miserable to something better. There are definitely some sad bits. I recommend it.
