"By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes."-Macbeth
What's maybe the strangest thing about this somewhat overlooked 80s fantasy horror is that is was released by Walt Disney. It's quite dark for a kids' film, but not violent enough to appeal to the slasher fan, so it fell between the cracks. Based on the Ray Bradbury book (He also wrote the screenplay.), it's about an evil carnival that comes to a small town. It looks back to Mark Twain's story "The Mysterious Stranger" and forward to Stephen King's "Needful Things," which was also filmed. The film has some genuinely frightening moments and a good cast, including Jason Robards, a creepy Jonathan Pryce, Diane Ladd, and Pam Grier. Apparently, Disney had a different vision than Bradbury and director Jack Clayton and the perhaps because of this the film is uneven and badly paced. Still, it's worth a look if you're a Bradbury or horror fan. Jack Clayton did a classic adaptation of "The Turn of the Screw" in the 60s called "The Innocents."

Based on the best-selling 1962 novel by venerable SF and horror writer Ray Bradbury--who also penned this cinematic adaptation--1983's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES is the unabashedly nostalgic story of two young boys, Will Halloway (Vidal Peterson) and Jim Nightshade (Shawn Carson), who engage in a battle of wills with Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce), the nefarious proprietor of a preternatural carnival that that literally blows into the boys' hometown one brisk October night (circa 1940). When Will and Jim discover that Dark and his troupe of midway miscreants are hiding some evil secret that might endanger the town, the boys take it upon themselves to uncover the truth and protect their friends and neighbors.

Set in the late 19th Century - This well-produced Disney production is a rather tame (but, all the same, effective) little tale of terror. Its story was adapted for the screen from the novel of the same name, written by Ray Bradbury, who was also responsible for this film's screenplay.

Told from a 12 year-old boy's point of view - This film's story is set in Green Town, USA (a typical mid-western, American town).

It's late Autumn and a strange, travelling carnival, run by Mr. Dark, arrives (seemingly out of nowhere) and mysteriously sets itself up, in a matter of mere seconds, on the outskirts of town.

Before long the forces of darkness begin to manifest themselves, casting a sleepy, hypnotic spell over all of the unsuspecting townsfolk. 2 terrified young boys soon discover that Mr. Dark, with all of his malevolent power and wickedness, intends to control the town and seize all of the innocent souls.

This fantasy tale is an old-fashioned, even gentle, story of the supernatural, that seems, most likely, best appreciated by pre-teens..... (*Watch movie-trailer*)

I have to admit I'm not surprised why I've never heard of this movie in Disney. It's dark and for young viewers it would be scary. I was even freaked out by some scenes. It was interesting with the concept of peoples fears and deepest desires being manipulated. I did like the ending and how it felt hopeless yet then the darkness was vanquished!

Dark Disney TV movie from late 70's - interesting for it's style as much as for the storyline. I had forgotten what dis was like in those days before modern animated films.
