More an exploration of inner than of outer space, Tarkovsky's eerie mystic parable is given substance by the filmmaker's boldly original grasp of film language and the remarkable performances by all the principals.

Wow! This Andrey Tarkovsky's movie is amazing! One of the best science fictions films! Natalya Bondarchuk is beautiful! A bit different from the book of Stanislaw Lem, but I like movie more!

One of the masterpieces of science fiction filmmaking- just a beautiful, mesmerizing, thought provoking film.

Poor Andrei! When author Stanislaw Lem saw this film he hated it and scathingly criticized everything about it. Given the budgetary and other restrictions under which Tarkovsky had to work, I consider it a masterpiece. Tarkovsky himself regarded Solaris as his least successful film, but never explained exactly why he felt that way. In the early 1970's the original subtitled cinema release was withdrawn and replaced by an absolutely awful version overdubbed by some language institute in Paris. At the time of this writing (July 2017) a newly restored copy of the film is available to art-house theaters. The worst insult Solaris suffered was when Steven Soderberg decided to do a remake. At first I was enthused with the idea, because Lem's mimoids, symmetriads, asymmetriads and other phenomena of the planet Solaris would present an amazing challenge for modern state-of-the-art computer generated imagery (given an adequate budget). Alas, Soderberg produced a muddled and uninspired mess. (on it's release a well known female film critic quipped "the only thing worth seeing in this movie was George Cloony's gorgeous naked butt".

Amazing film- it asks serious questions about the nature of consciousness and ultimately, what it means to be human.

About as much about sci-fi as Citizen Kane is about the newspaper business. But if you'd like to find out something about the persistence of human emotion and memory, this is the place to go

A couple of key thematic differences from the book.
A very slow moving film; scratches/ skipping at the beginning and the end seriously mar the enjoyment of the film (I never found out what the letter to Kris at the end contained).

One of the masterpieces of science fiction filmmaking - the lame American remake couldn't hold a candle to the original. A very deep film with many meanings- that require multiple viewings to appreciate.

I liked the science fiction idea more than the movie itself. I kept thinking I'd seen the same idea in one the original Star Trek episodes, all of which I must have seen repeatedly. Well, I'm sure they mined Stanislaw Lem too.
