Wen Zhang essays the life and times of National Revolutionary Army general Zhang Xueliang, who was nicknamed Shao Shuai or Young Marshal. Born in turn-of-the-century China, he was the oldest son of warlord Zhang Zuolin (Li Xuejian) and trained for the battlefield from a young age. From the day he entered military academy, Zhang Xueliang would be destined to experience the bitter trials of war and the turbulent era he was born into, from leading troops into battle to the mutiny of his close friend to the loss of his father. After his father was assassinated by the Japanese in 1928, Zhang Xueliang became the effective ruler of Northeastern China. In 1936 in what is known as the Xi'an Incident, he captured Chiang Kai Shek and forced him to forge a truce with the Chinese Communist Party in order to unite and fight against the Japanese. Because of the incident, remembered as a turning point for the Communist Party and the Sino-Japanese War, Zhang would end up spending over 50 years of his life in house arrest. Song Jia and Zhang Xinyi co-star as the two loves of his life.
