GREAT DVD originally released in 1985 which covers about 100 years of dance on film. So good I'll likely buy my own copy to watch whenever I want.
Film celebrates dancing as one of the great human art forms which, of course, preceded film technology.
It includes fabulous cuts of all the great dancers from their films, including (surprisingly) 'So This Is Paris' which was a 1926 silent comedy which included dancing.
Gives lots of credit to great Busby Berkeley who brought innovative dance to films in 1930's. Particularly good excerpts from I Only Have Eyes for You, and Lullaby on Broadway.
includes some great tap dancing (now one of my favorites) by Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell.
Fun older clips - like child Shirley Temple dancing/singing with Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, Sammy Davis, Jr. dancing as a youth, and part of the Ray Bolger Scarecrow dance from Wizard of Oz which wasn't included in film (for unknown reason).
And it does cover modern dancing, too. I was rather surprised at how fabulous a dancer John Travolta was in his stage dance in Saturday Night Fever. Some impressive break dancing, too.
