The thrilling sequel to Red Sparrow --CIA insider Jason Matthews's compulsively readable New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner--featuring Russian spy Dominika Egorova and CIA agent Nate Nash "shimmers with authenticity. The villains are richly drawn...the scenes of them on the job are beyond chilling" ( The New York Times Book Review ).

Captain Dominika Egorova of the Russian Intelligence Service despises the oligarchs, crooks, and thugs of Putin's Russia--but what no one knows is that she is also working for the CIA. Her "sparrow" training in the art of sexual espionage further complicates the mortal risks she must take, as does her love for her handler Nate Nash--a shared lust that is as dangerous as treason.

As Dominika expertly dodges exposure, she deals with a murderously psychotic boss, survives an Iranian assassination attempt and attempts to rescue an arrested double agent--and thwart Putin's threatening flirtations. A grand, wildly entertaining ride through the steel-trap mind of a CIA insider, Palace of Treason is a story "as suspenseful and cinematic as the best spy movies" ( The Philadelphia Inquirer )--one that feels fresh and so possible, in fact, that it's doubtful this novel can ever be published in Russia.

I read Red Sparrow and thoroughly enjoyed it. I read Palace of Treason with the expectation of it reaching the level of Red Sparrow. It was acceptable. I'll read the Kremlin's Candidate and hope for a return to Sparrow's level. If it's another Matthews' "so-so" I'll be happy if he calls it the end of the Red Sparrow Trilogy.

Now just past thirty, Dominika the brilliant graduate at State School Four, AKA the secret sexpionage academy Sparrow School, was tasked to turn an Iranian centrifugal isotope separation scientist into a SVR mole. Much similarity in the novel's elements as the first Red Sparrow trilogy.
*Good stuffs: foodies for Russian dishes, particularly eggplants, zingers, a complicated multinational cloak and dagger operation.
*Not so good stuffs: Too much details on eats, many cliches, unconvincing love story.

Began to skip paragraphs and sometimes pages on sex bits anchored to an unconvincing lovefest and recipes at end of chapters altogether. Don't think I missed anything significant in so doing. If I want to read an erotic novel or cook book, this ain't it.

I enjoyed the first book of the series ( Red Sparrow) very much, and looked forward to reading this, but only got about half way through this before giving up.

No worry about a sophomore slump with Jason Matthews. This, his second installment in the Red Sparrow trilogy, comes roaring out of the gate with non-stop, razor's edge espionage action, as mole hunts on both sides of the table get hotter and hotter. This is still not a perfect book, but it is tighter than Red Sparrow (less extraneous filler), and Matthews' skills as a writer are growing.
I do hope he continues to write and gives us more in this vein.

After reading Red Sparrow I needed more and was elated to find out Jason Matthews wrote two more books on Dominika Egorova. In the first book I didn't get the recipes, and Matthews continues the same pattern in this book, but this time I became a believer. The goal is full and total immersion and I did a belly flop right on the deep end. The action and pace is almost dizzying. Matthews doesn't let up for even a minute. I don't think I took a breath for the entire third act of the book. I can not wait to dive into the Kremlin's Candidate. I'd love to shake the hand of the man who not only has me creating Russian dishes (to the surprising delight of my household) but has taught me enough Russian to consider a trip abroad. I finished the book in four days of non-stop, barely time to use a bookmark reading and I love every second of it. Secretly, I am still holding out hope for a Jason Matthews screenplay with all three books coming to our screens via Netflix or Amazon
**It goes without saying that one should never watch the movie Red Sparrow. As Hollywood is prone to do they completely butchered the story and cheated the beautiful Jennifer Lawrence out of what would have been a blockbuster trilogy.

I agree with the reviewer on the matter of too much filler from previous book. It is interesting and suspenseful, however the ending is not as good as the ending in Red Sparrow. Still it is worth the read.

A great sequel that is even better and more courageously plotted than 'Red Sparrow.' This keeps you intrigued avidly turning the pages and there is one chapter featuring nerds that is LOL funny. The authenticity moves this novel up two levels from a standard Jack Higgins but just under Tom Clancy and Daniel Silva. Must admit I've tried some of the dishes but there are some Matthews' recipes I'd avoid like the plague.

Picks up a few months after the events of Red Sparrow, Palace of Treason is a worthy sequel, with all the pacing and wonderful intrigue I loved in the first novel, plus the recipes at the end of each chapter! I eagerly await the third installment of this series.

Now I can see Putin, though the book went wild to make me believe. Color auras, not all in consistency with my vision, is a clever tool, as much in writing as in heroine's trick.
Highly formulated writing, could be done by computer with human input, seamless. With guilty pleasure, I may want to proceed the yet published sequel, before I forget all the jargon, acronyms about surveillance (black in all six; I'm cotton wooled...), recruitment (asset, handler...).

In this "extraordinarily commanding, acidly relevant, and unrelentingly suspenseful" (Booklist) follow-up to the Edgar Award-winning Red Sparrow, Russian intelligence double agent Dominika Egorova edges ever closer to danger. She's got President Putin in her cross-hairs, but a rival operative has her in his. Add to that a treasonous American who knows enough to expose her, and a tricky Russian uranium deal with Iran, and Dominika and her CIA lover/case officer are in trouble. Complexly plotted and extremely detailed in characterization and tradecraft alike, Palace of Treason is a must-read for spy fiction fans.
