This graphic novel is an ode to the defining element of fandom. It celebrates both the culture's theatricality and D.I.Y. beauty--as well as its often-awkward conflation of fantasy with reality--in seven interconnected short stories about two young women. Cosplayers is an affectionate, funny book about how fandom can be much more inclusive and humanistic than the stories and characters it's built upon.

You might think this graphic novel is about two cosplaying girls... and it is. But it's also about making online videos, going to conventions, trying to go 'mainstream' and the power of a good comic. Nearly any fan can find something to relate to here.

As a cosplayer, I picked this up as soon as I saw it. But I felt the title and cover were misleading. The back promised "relatable stories for cosplayers, and some insight into the community from non-cosplayers." However, only ONE story in the entire anthology is focused on the activity of cosplay. And while, yes, it was a fairly accurate representation of the convention scene, the rest of the stories are offbeat dramas about the two main characters. And they lose all reliability/sympathy from the very first story when they assault two guys for the sake of their webseries. The vibe of the storytelling is that of a "pretentious" indy. Not recommended, don't waste your time on this like I did.

A gentler successor to "Ghost World" illuminates the break between Gen X and millennial culture. A must-read.

Fun! It really spoke to me as a weeb that used to go to anime cons as a high schooler/early college student.

"I get that cosplay is about dressing as someone else, but it's also about being yourself!"
