Massive mashup of Sailor Moon and Captain Planet. Add in the colors of Jem. Give this to young middle school girls who want their superhero stories with fewer shadows.

I adored Zodiac Starforce. It's definitely for a fans of strong female characters, but also for those who grew up with the magical girl genre ala Sailor Moon. Tons of fun, and a very good LGBT+ recommendation as well.

For those who are seeking a female-empowering story, where girls are the heroes, but still act like girls, the magical girl genre is for you, and this western-made magical girl story is a great gateway for trying it. Zodiac Starforce features a diverse (including ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation), and complex, group of young women who must battle the forces of evil, while dealing with their own personal issues. At the centre of it all is Emma (aka Gemini, and the leader of the Zodiac Starforce), who thought her magical girl life was over, up until the point that a powerful monster appears. Each member reacts differently to this news, and it is only when Emma becomes tainted, that they pull together to try and save her life. This graphic novel has all the sparkles, transformations, battles, and friendship that you could wish for from a magical girl story. The package is drawn in a western style, but the manga/anime influence is evident in the expressive faces, use of non-rectangular panels, beautifully bright colour choices, and more. While the story is engaging, it does consistently suffer from some awkward pacing. Action scenes in particular could have benefited from more shots to clarify what was happening, and to maintain a steadier flow. Characters also change a little too fast considering the short amount of time that passes in the narrative. These however are minor issues when compared to the highlights; the characters, their relationships with one another, and the mythos (this graphic novel represents just a fraction of their story). A great feel-good story that will lighten your heart.

This is a story about 4 teenagers with magical powers harnessed by a zodiac queen!
This is a wonderful grapic novel, I can't wait for the next one.
It was heartwarming with friendship and dealing with bullying!
I loved it.

A fun and colorful ride. The visuals were spot on for this sailor moon feeling graphic and while the writing left a little to be desired at times it was still quite a fun read with all sorts of great girl-power.

This book was just not my style - I've never been a fan of the magical girl when it's played as straight as this is. The characters were very flat, and I felt like I'd been dropped into the volume lacking vital background info.
