Although on the surface, this film seems to be just another torture horror movie, but it envelops and incorporates various themes throughout the film. It is a deep psychological film which leaves the viewer emotionally drained and deeply pondering.

I've always been a fan of horror- the more shocking the better- and I've seen an incredibly wide variety of films. That being said, this may have been the most disturbing films that I've ever seen (not to say that I didn't enjoy it, I loved it). The acting was great and the effects were perfect. The thing that made the gore and the violence so horrific was that it was realistic- it was things that could happen to people or has happened to people, in some extremely unfortunate cases. The violence isn't pointless or irrelevant to the story. It's one of those movies where you start to watch, thinking it's about one thing, but then it grows into something so much bigger than you could have imagined. It leaves you with a lot to think about afterwards.

A good horror film with a lot of very gruesome violence, and a twisting storyline.

I fast-forwarded through the repeated beatings of a young woman, who is then flayed alive, to turn her into a reporter about what's on 'the other side'.

... artistic torture porn ?

This film is, in it's own right, a really fun ride. If you are into extreme horror that is. It's well made & can sit side by side with A Serbian Film & The Human Centipede series as being one of the best in production & intensity of this genre. The story line is original & well acted. The f/x are awesome & the ending leaves you with something to think about. One of the most violent & disturbing movies ever. The film is a relentless, visual, thrill ride with twists you'll never see coming. I highly recommend this to any fan of extreme horror.

The comments posted before mine are very accurate. This is good, but be warned about the vengeful violence, brutality, and absolutely viscious nature of the torture depicted. This is definitely a film for adults only. Anybody who isn't a serial killer is going to find themselves very unsettled as this movie progresses. There is a point to it all though, so it isn't just done for the sake of trying to shock the audience. This was worth watching and I recognize how well it's made, and what they accomplished, but honestly, I wouldn't ever want to watch this a 2nd time -- and I watch lots of horror movies (and read horror books) so that should give you an indication of what to expect. The 'making of' extra is also worth watching.

Very unexpected twist in the third act! You either hate this movie or you love it. It not only is extremely unsettling, it will keep you talking for days to come. I think this was the director's intentions. Definitely not your gory-porn flick you may expect from Saw or Hostel. This is much better.

This movies reputation proceeds it... and it lives up to the brutality expected. It is hard for a spell watching a girl get beat up over... and over... and over... but in my opinion it is not gratuitious. There is a point to be made here and if you stick with it to the end, your thirst for gore as well as a good story will be well clenched.

When I found this on the shelves of the central library, I was shocked. I never expected anything like Martyrs to be carried by a library!

This is one of my favorite films, but I always warn everyone I mention it to that this film is BRUTAL, but it's not a torture porn. It is so much more than that. Martyrs is a part of the French Extreme wave of films, a style of recent film making that pushes the boundaries past everything previously deemed acceptable in the film industry. Take the gore of Hostel (multiply it by 100 and make it realistic) and combine it with a psychologically, emotionally terrifying plot, absolutely demented characters, and some plot aspects that just trigger fear at the most instinctive level of your being, and you have Martyrs.

Honestly, I first saw this film at 18 and I still feel like I wasn't necessarily prepared for the brutality of it. It's not something you want to go into not expecting how brutal and in your face it is going to be. Even if you are a seasoned horror film veteran, you WILL be uncomfortable. You WILL be scared. And you will NOT be able to get it out of your head. The ending of the film still bothers and perplexes me to this day.
And if you have a weak stomach, this film is not for you. Not just because of the blood. Trust me. It gets worse than blood.

I've seen Martyrs maybe a dozen times and it STILL makes me incredibly uncomfortable and jumpy every time I re-watch it. But there's just something about it that has me hooked.

Also: This movie DOES contain triggers for anyone who has experienced childhood physical abuse. The plot revolves heavily on the past child abuse of one of the main characters. So if you have trauma related to that, I don't recommend this film.

Pascal Laugier, the director, has said in interviews that he often switches between feeling proud of the film, and hating himself for making it.

It truly is a masterpiece of horror. If you haven't been dissuaded by this review, I definitely recommend picking it up! Just be prepared for what you're about to witness!
