Dancing in the Rain revolves around 16 year old Brenna and her journey to acceptance after her adoptive mother died. She receives guidance from Ryan, an Australian newcomer who helps her grow physically and emotionally. Along the way, she encounters various problems within her family such as her troubled sister, Naysa, and hopes of reconnecting with her birth mother, Kia. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, especially since the setting is based in Vancouver, BC. There were frequent references to Grouse Mountain, and others such as the Stanley Park Seawall and The Chief near Squamish, making the whole reading experience a lot more compelling. Every character had unique characteristics and great significance to the story which helped move the plot line forward. They were realistic and you're bound to connect with at least one character. The story also had multiple subplots, some of which were abruptly introduced and could have taken some time to build-up, but nonetheless assisted in enhancing the plot. Overall, I think Dancing in the Rain is a rollercoaster ride and I'd definitely read another novel by Shelley Hrdlitschka.

I would give this novel a 4.5/5.
