Since their mother's death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane. One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.

Definitely one of the best, Sadie is my favorite. She is funny in a way I did not expect. Meanwhile, Carter is... just Carter. When/If you read the book you will understand. Can not wait to read the next book!

An interesting read, although I would have to say I enjoyed Riordan's other works better (excepting Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard; that series was purely TERRIBLE). A little slow-paced and repetitive at the beginning, but it gets better around the one third mark. I was not expecting Carter and Sadie to be hosting Horus and Isis! There was a lack of a solid plot and Sadie kept swearing with "god" (I disapprove of such language).

It took me until halfway in to really start enjoying the book. As a fan of the Percy Jackson series, I expected a similar format with instantly engaging heroes, madcap mythological adventures, and a fast pace. The beginning of the novel feels more than a little repetitive and slow (despite the almost constant chase scenes). I was bound and determined to dislike this book but then, midway through the novel, something marvelous happened. The book allowed itself to slow down, to take in the world, to explore the characters. I began to care, I began to completely love the world Rick Riordan was creating around me. At first, I didn't know if I wanted to finish the book. Now, I'm absolutely excited to pick up the sequel. I feel like this book could have been improved by quite a lot of editing as good portions of the beginning felt unnecessarily long. That being said, I would absolutely recommend this book. If you're like me and have trouble with the beginning, stick with it. The improvement is exponential. I'm so very excited to see where this goes. I'm hooked.

This is a truly amazing story filled with adventure and discovery. This series is a must read!!!! The Kane Chronicles is an exciting plot just as good as Percy Jackson.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There is a creepy zombie-dude named Face of Horror (Riordan describes vividly). Set is evil. Might be disturbing to younger children when a certain character is discovered to really be a shabti and breaks into pieces.
