Not a bad adaptation and pretty much followed the original book.

My advice is to read the novel first and then read this graphic novel.

Brilliantly written. Simple enough for children, intriguing enough for adults.
The characters alone are praiseworthy, all extremely developed with 'relatable' personalities.
Action scenes are fabulously done. The humor is genius, I found myself snickering a number of times throughout the book. Both my writer and reader 'side' can agree, this book is a masterpiece.

I don't like giving low ratings, but neither this book nor the second one really captured my interest. The action didn't seem as high-stakes as it should have, and the characters weren't people to me. Personally, I thought the idea was clever, but the presentation was flat. Just not for me, I guess.
*Update* The series does get better, however, in the third and fourth books.

Had Artemis Fowl on my list of reads for later for a while, and finally decided to pick it up. From the first chapter, I recognized Eoin Colfer's fantastic writing style and dialogue. The way he portrays his character's thoughts and skips from different points of view in one scene takes a little getting used to, but once you do that the story can unfold naturally. I was impressed with how he subtly made each character likable. Yes, Artemis Fowl is the villain of the story (though the opposite, that the fairies are really the villains, could also be true), but he is also relate-able, entertaining, and fun. The same could be said of some of the other main and side characters.
The plot came to a finalizing climax, and the ending left room for the rest of the series. I definitely am planning to pursue it. :D

Beginning in present day, Artemis is an Irish twelve-year-old who is the son of a recently disappeared former millionaire. Artemis also just happens to be a brilliant criminal mastermind. To solve his family's money troubles, Artemis decides to kidnap a fairy (fairies are known to have incredible treasure) and hold her for ransom. What Artemis doesn't realize is that the fairies will stop at nothing to rescue their friend, and Artemis might just be in for the challenge of his life. This is the first in a series of Artemis's tangles with the fairy realm and is recommended for kids who like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. Artemis is definitely a different kind of hero, but well worth the time it will take to get through the seven books in his saga with the fairy underworld.

Coarse Language: just a little bit of swearing, and some of it is in the language of the fairies.

Other: some intense crude humor. Parts of it I don't mind, but others.... it would be way better without that stuff.
