While there are so many movies set in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, and medieval Europe, Kings of the Sun focuses on the clash of the Mayans with early Native Americans hundreds of years ago, making this movie so unique for its time and I think until this very day. Mayan culture was and is rarely featured in Hollywood movies and for that reason, Kings of the Sun remains to be one of my favourite movies. Mayan King Balam (played by George Chakiris) leads his tribe north across the Gulf of Mexico to the United States via ships. They build a home in the new land, but come into conflict with a tribe of Native Americans led by their chief, Black Eagle (played by Yul Brynner) and when Balam and Black Eagle fall in love with the same beautiful girl, it creates even more conflict for both tribes. It is shocking that both the Mayans and Native Americans who just met actually speak the same language. I guess it is a part of the plotline you just have to forgive. Kings of the Sun inspired me to learn more about early Mayan and Native American cultures. This classic movie is an adventure epic that won’t disappoint. Watch this movie! 5 out of 5 stars. @janmarrow1225 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
