With stunning artwork and a rhyming text, the illustrator of the Mercy Watson books tells a tale of human-animal connection full of humor and heart.

When a circus ship runs aground off the coast of Maine, the poor animals are left on their own to swim the chilly waters. Staggering onto a nearby island, they soon win over the wary townspeople with their kind, courageous ways. So well do the critters blend in that when the greedy circus owner returns to claim them, villagers of all species conspire to outsmart the bloated blowhard. With buoyant rhymes and brilliantly caricatured illustrations evoking the early nineteenth century, Chris Van Dusen presents a hugely entertaining tale about the bonds of community -- and a rare hidden-pictures spread for eagle-eyed readers of all ages.

A great story encompassing animals, a ship and the 'mean man' - my nearly three year old loves this book! :-)

my 3 years old twin boys loved it. The beautiful illustration with bright colors and the rhymes captured their attention. They also enjoyed scanning over each page to see the hidden animals. I was a hit even for their younger brother

Shipwreck, close to drawing animals, scary faces of antagonist could be frightening to younger audience.

A captivating story that features circus animals and the kids of a town. The story is written in rhyme, so it is fun to read. When I read it to my granddaughters, they regularly interrupt the story, in order to count the animals in the illustration, to confirm the correct number of animals.

The first half of the book was a little dark, but we loved the second half when the sun came out! We especially love playing I Spy to find the animals at the end!
