My husband brought this high school romantic comedy manga series home from the library and almost fell off the couch laughing. Then I started reading it and ALSO almost fell off the couch laughing. So, protective gear is advisable?

It starts by subverting your expectations. Takeo, the giant bruiser who would normally be the sidekick, is the romantic lead. The glamorous looking cool guy is a secondary character, Takeo's infinitely patient best friend Sunakawa. When Takeo falls in love with Yamato, this tiny, cute girl in his grade, it becomes clear that both parties are 100% clueless about dating, in the most mutually devoted and entertaining way. If it weren't for the periodic intervention of Sunakawa, it's anybody's guess what would become of this poor couple.

It's refreshing, sweet, and well worth the 12 not-overly-long volumes. This was our most anticipated series for a couple of years until it concluded.

My Love Story is more a sweet, fun comedy than it is traditional romance. In fact creator Kazune Kawahara, does quite a few nontraditional things with this series. First off, this is one of few shoujo series that features a male protagonist, which is not unusual in itself, but Goda is a bear of boy. He looks tough, and he is not considered handsome by current standards. His personality though is absolutely adorable. He is earnest to a fault, considerate, a bit naive, is incredibly brave...oh, and he is a sappy romantic. All this becomes apparent in just the first few chapters, where he saves sweet girl Rinko, and the two become an item. They are an unusual pair, which is quite evident just from their contrasting character designs, but otherwise they are made for each other. Awkwardness, exaggeration, and the unexpected are the keys to this story's appeal. It must be noted that humour is never made at this couple's expense; they themselves, and their relationship are treated fairly and with warmth. My Love Story is actually a great read because it features a different type of pair.
