Interresting early Wallander. The premisses are sometime weak, predicable, and somewhat similar. Stiil they are good reads. The longest 'short story', the Pyramid, is full of unnecessary fillers. We learn nothing by them. The best part is Wallander's trip to Egypt, trying to get his father out of trouble. I find otherwise the conclusion anti-climatic. Things have been left unanswered as if something had to put an end to the story. Many characters have not been fully developed, most of all the sisters. The plane crash also has not been dug to my satisfaction. The drug thing isn't even discussed.

A good addition to the development of the Kurt Wallander series. Mankell is a gifted story-teller with much to say below the surface. I also recommend his novels outside fo the Wallander police mysteries as well.

Good introduction to the Kurt Wallander character. The story about his first case truly sets the stage for all that follows in the series.

I'd heard of this author, and wanted to try him out. I decided to start with the first in the series - published recently but tells of the beginnings of his character Kurt Wallander.
Very much enjoyed it - I like this kind character, the rough and ready, somewhat flawed but stramgley effective detective.
Very interesting intro to the series, next for me is The Dogs of Riga. And I've tracked down the BBC seies Wallander - wow!!

BTW - this is translated form the Swedish, my only complaint is that the sentences sometimes get short and choppy - distracting me from the story.

After recently being introduced to the Wallander series, I decided to start at the beginning. I found this series of stories, and its progression in Wallander's development as an investigator, quite interesting.

Visit http://www.inspector-wallander.org/guide/timeline.html for a list of the books in the series, along with their publication dates.
