one of the greatest movies of the 80's and all time the sory of early nasa spacecraft includes john glenn alan shepard gus grisson(aka virgil).the ending will make you cry. when gus was dead during early space program.along with three others this was before challenger and Columbia. this was the original mankind tragedy. I think everyone will enjoy it for decades to come.classic 80's movie.

A tweet popped up the other day from none other than Chuck Yeager on his birthday. The first man to break the sound barrier (as is depicted in dramatic fashion in this film) is still alive and tweeting. In the midst of chaos of 2020, that fact alone gave me a little shot in the arm.

When the space program was under way the public face of astronauts’ personalities was robotic and sanitized, whether to protect privacy or for the sake of general approval. ‘Stuff’ celebrates how mealy or goofed up they really were (except for Harris’ Glenn who’s strange for being goody goody). . . Shepard’s macho solipsism as Yeager is hard to deal with. But events show them asserting themselves against a dehumanizing employer while risking life and limb to expand boundaries. NASA was created for propagandistic rather than scientific purposes; to this day it issues absurdly far-fetched theories for Life on Mars or whatever justifies its existence. ‘Stuff’ shows us both cynicism and awe-inspiring adventure; not for people who can only handle reality in simple form.

Philip Kaufman masterpiece on space travel. The movie takes the time to be complete and to tell the entire story. There was not going to be a "RIGHT STUFF TWO"! Mr. Kaufman (and his wife) are both experienced script writers. The story must be complete. Short cuts usually mean leaving out essential facts in a story. Believe me, I once worked for the movie studio that produced one of his films, Philip Kaufman does not work for being paid off at the box office.

An extremely long film, and rather slow too. The macho-ness of the pilots is emphasized, but none of the other qualities that they had similar treatment. The sound was great; there were far to many cutbacks and close ups; a few funny scenes lightened the mood.

For fans of The Band, the appearance of Levon Helm in a supportive role is a plus.

Good if you don't have time to read the book. If you've read the book it might seem a little tedious because the book was so awesome.

This is a 1983 American epic semi-docudrama directed by Philip Kaufman, adapted from Tom Wolfe's best-selling 1979 book of the same name about the Navy, Marine and Air Force test pilots who were involved in aeronautical research at Edwards Air Force Base, California, as well as the seven military pilots who were selected to be the astronauts for Project Mercury---the first manned spaceflight by the United States.
The film shows the events of breaking the sound barrier as well as the historical events of the Mercury project.
Although it is a fascinating entertaining piece, it is slow-paced at times with tedious dramas.

Just watched this again for the first time since it was first released. Excellent movie. Great cast, but I especially enjoyed Dennis Quaid's performance as the super cocky Gordo Cooper. A very long movie, but well worth watching.
