With vibrant colors and bold geometric forms, Gerald McDermott brilliantly captures the stylized look of Pueblo Indian art in this Caldecott Award-winning retelling of an ancient legend. A young boy searches for his father, but before he can claim his heritage he must first prove his worthiness by passing through the four ceremonial chambers: the kiva of lions, the kiva of snakes, the kiva of bees, and the kiva of lightning. Striking in its simplicity and grace, Arrow to the Sun vividly evokes the Native American reverence for the source of all life--the Solar Fire.

This is a very nice, heart-warming story. Good one for kids to hear. The art is beautiful, and fits in well with the theme of the book. Read it back when I was eight or so, and I still love it. Whether it's an authentic Pueblo story is irrelevant; people think too much about these things. Good choice for your first or second grader.

Unfortunately a misrepresentation of Pueblo culture. It should however be used as a resource to teach students/kids about how authors and illustrators can get things wrong.

This particular illustration style doesn't appeal to me, but it's a nice enough folk tale.

A beautiful book with incredibly detailed Native American art. Great discussion starter with younger kids.
