Opinion

From Library Staff

"E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" depicts the friendship between a child and an alien who just wants to go home.

Not necessarily a Halloween movie, but it always reminds me of Halloween time anyways. A little boy develops a great relationship with a lost alien.

At the time ET first was released I lived with my family just outside of Calgary on an acreage. We watched TV on a weak signal via antenna. (It's not much better now that I live back in Calgary) But this was the movie that was my very first VHS purchase for my two children as a Christmas present. And the starter to all subsequent purchases. It truly was a very good movie and reminded me of better times. Like the Wizard of Oz, this will last the test of time. If you have time, disc two is quite long, but a must-see..... Steven Spielberg and crew are brilliant.

I recently watched this my dad and sister. My dad had watched it when he was a kid and loved it so he wanted us to watch it with him and I thought it was fantastic!! I loved E.T. he's so funny I don't understand why some people say he's creepy and annoying. I think my favorite moments of his are (spoiler alert) when Elliot's siblings meet E.T. and the little sister is screaming and E.T. is screaming as well and then the mom comes home and they are all running to Elliot's room to hide. Oh, I also like when the mom checks Elliot's room and to hide E.T. hides among all of Elliott's dolls and the mom doesn't notice! I also like when the siblings are in Halloween costumes and E.T. notices the older brother's costume (a pretend knife through the head) and he tries to heal it and the brother has to convince E.T. that it's pretend. Let's not forget the time when Elliot is saying goodbye to E.T. and E.T. can't stop saying 'E.T. phone home. E.T. phone home. E.T. phone home.' :) Well that's all the really funny moments I can think of!

This movie was a good family movie. E.T. was an adoring character that grew on you throughout the episode. Although sad in parts, E.T. was a terrific creation that tugged on your heart strings.

This probably speaks more to how easily stressed out I was as a child, but the part where the government people come for E.T. with the hazmat suits and everything colored my viewing experience so strongly that I haven't watched E.T. since.

Probably the best family movie ever made.

I don't understand why this movie is a classic. The plot is weird, and E.T. is dorky and annoying. Also there is quite a bit more language and crude jokes than I would appreciate in this movie. Not a "classic" as everyone claims. Not recommended.

A classic from a master director.

I recently re-watched this film after having not seen it since I was a child. I truly disliked it. The special effects were impressive, but like so many films of the 1980's, the main character ruined it for me. Why were so many of the children of 1980's films such royal brats? I don't find it precocious; I find it annoying. I did like the oldest brother, and found him and his story far more interesting than his younger brother. I sympathized with the mom as well. I found E.T. the character as both creepy and annoying. There were touching moments within this film, but overall, I don't understand why this film is considered a classic. I wasn't particularly enamored of it when I was a kid, and as an adult, I find it practically unwatchable.

Didn't believe corny first contact film as a kid when it came out.
Why people want to watch rose tinted film back then?
Even I knew on European explorers, adventurers & settlers changed pre-industrial societies extrapolated into nothing good.
Easily understood US government's reaction to E.T given they did to many cultures & possibility of no resistance to new or mutated diseases via cross-contamination.

Now nearly 40 years old - E.T. barely deserves a 2-star rating.

Michael: "Maybe it was an iguana." Elliot: "It was NO iguana." Michael: "Maybe, um - you know how they say there are alligators in the sewers?" Gertie: "Alligators in the sewers." Mary: "All we're trying to say is, maybe you just probably imagined it. It happened..." Elliot: "I couldn't have imagined it!" Michael: "Maybe it was a pervert or a deformed kid or something." Gertie: "A deformed kid." Michael: (mockingly) "Maybe an elf or a leprechaun." Elliot: "It was nothing like that, penis-breath!" Mary: (laughs in shock) "ELLIOT! Sit down."
