There are some books that are done so well, they can immediately draw in children's attention. My kids absolutely love this book and I love reading it to them. The illustrations are beautiful and they story is wonderful.

Blurring the line between the real and imagined world but clearly about heartfelt friendship and doing the unimaginable together.

Beekle's journey and search for a friend who can "see" him is beautifully illustrated and a nod to the quirky among us.

At this point, Dan Santat do a book about petroleum engineering, and I would read it. I know nothing about petroleum engineering, have no actual interest in it, and can’t think how it would be relevant to my life. But Santat is JUST SO GOOD. His imagination, his storytelling, his character design, his illustration. He’s one of our favorite creators of children’s picture books.

The Adventures of Beekle is not about petroleum engineering. It’s about an imaginary friend who’s waited too long to be imagined. Rather than give up hope, he sets off on a journey. It’s scary. But he sticks with it. And eventually, his faith is richly rewarded. Every two page spread in this book is unique and perfect for the part of the story he’s telling. So well crafted. Love it.

My daughter loved the imagination of this picture book.

The imaginary friends Santat conjures also help to make this book incredibly special. There is a polygon panda, an octopus covered in tribal markings, and Chinese sea dragons. The sheer number and variations of creatures will have readers exploring every wondrous detail.

Caldecott Winner 2015

The illustrations in THE ADVENTURES OF BEEKLE may be the closest to gamer-realm while also being the best mixed-media illustrations I've seen in years: they closely resemble video game and 3D animated movies with bright colors and bubbley shapes. While traditionalists may shy away from this type of illustration, I think kids today are hungry for this feast for the eyes (forgive the pun!), full of artistic expression and movement. With what look to be edited or smoothed over 3D animated illustrations mixed with traditional styles, it's no surprise that this title wowed the Caldecott committee. Coupled with the endearing story of an imaginary friend in search of his unimaginably friend, this story is quite new, and no doubt a standout. Best for ages 5-9.

This Caldecott winner tells the story of Beekle, an imaginary friend. There’s just one problem: he hasn’t been imagined yet. Tired of waiting, he sets to find his perfect friend.
