It could have been an interesting movie... it does have beautiful scenery....but the story was very dull...and boring...not to mention one can hardly understand anything being said because of the accents..I had to turn the captions on...but even then...it was a very boring movie. PASS!

This movie set in Ireland has a fairy tale quality. It reminds me of The Secret of Roan Inish since both films refer to selkies, mythological creatures that are seals in the sea and humans on land. It features my favorite performance by Colin Farrell. He seems to often play thugs, and here his character is much more likable. Ondine may also be streamed through the OverDrive online resource available through Hennepin County Library. The movie is rated PG-13 for some violence, sensuality and brief strong language.

a bit spooky but has a nice feel to it. almost a "chick flick."

Modern day fairy tale in a way... I felt the actors were believable.

Neil Jordan has directed some fine films. But when he writes the scripts, as he does in Ondine, the adult female lead characters are either mysterious beings, or evil harridans , and sometimes both (insert your own madonna/whore remark here). This time, these characterizations are integral to the story. Some suspension of disbelieve is required, but Jordan doesn't overdo the magic realism. The actors play their roles well (the Farrell/Rea scenes are a joy), with the exception of the young actress who plays the ailing daughter. It may be unfair to expect a child to carry simultaneously the burden of most of the exposition, and of being a twee plot devise. Ireland is heart-stoppingly beautiful, as is Alicja Bachleda.

Modern fairy tale - just as grim as most fairy tales had to be to hold our interest and teach their lessons. Beautiful scenery and engaging characters.

Desperately needs English subtitles if you want to understand anything. The acting of the little girl was poor. The young lady was too much of a slut for me to enjoy her acting.

Not great or credible story. Somewhat fantasy love story with a bit of a banal explanation behind it. But sweet in places.

My copy had no English subtitles so at least half of the dialogue was unintelligible due to the Irish accents. An interesting story weaving in the mythology of selkes but without the ability to understand the dialogue, it ended up mostly as a frustrating experience in trying to figure out what was going on.

Very good script and cast. It is a fairy tale story applied to real life which those who gave this movie a one star did not understand. Happy ending makes this a feel good movie about hope and love.
