🐺 This movie (along with "The Howling") set the future in movie special effects. The brilliant SFX guy Rick Baker shows us Naughton's body stretching, twisting, expanding and painfully snapping into its new, vulpine form as a hairy critter. The transformation is exciting to watch, and movies were never the same again. The script and direction hark back to the first werewolf movies, but the comic relief is new. A deceased friend, Griffin Dunne, is decomposing, but he comes back the worse for wear each time, to let Naughton know what he's in for. There has to be a sex angle, seen to by Jenny Agutter. Recommended by the American Mothers Horror Appreciation Society, so you know it's got to be good!

(IMO) - What helped to elevate 1981's "An American Werewolf In London" to a level above being just a standard horror/monster movie were the elements of tongue-in-cheek humor which were regularly injected into its grisly story-line.

But, of course - With that said - When it comes to "American Werewolf's" pre-CGI monster effects - The viewer is definitely gonna have to be totally willing to cut this aspect of the film some really serious slack, otherwise one is certain to be left with a feeling of disappointment by what is being offered to them here.

Anyway - In the long run - I'd say that "An American Werewolf In London" was at least worth a view.

Yeah. Yeah. OK. OK.... This 1981 horror film's "old school" pre-CGI monster effects may appear to be painfully slow-moving and noticeably clumsy at times. Indeed!

But, hey! - What the heck! - When it comes around to this picture's spectacular "panicking mob" scene (impressively shot in London's "Piccadilly Circus" district) - I'm sure that all can be forgiven.

Directed by John Landis - "An American Werewolf In London" is a fairly entertaining slice of Comedy/Horror where you actually may be pleasantly surprised when some of its howling humor suddenly turns around and bites you on the ass.

This film contains both male and female nudity, as well as some intense sexual situations, too.

One of the best tongue in cheek horror classics ever. You can not go wrong with this one... i'm not a warewolf girl, but i watch this one every chance i get!

This is a great horror comedy. This does the entire horror genre a great credit. The effects ARE dated at this point, but the story and the overall affect of the movie still rock. Funny, gory and scary at times, this is a horror classic that still shines. Perhaps the quality of the huge crop of 80's horror movies. Groundbreaking. Classic.

The overall content of this film was intelligent and impressive. What I did not enjoy was the fact that near the end it felt rushed, and I was disappointed with the ending.

As far as I know, this was the first film to use both elements of horror and comedy, which apparently confused some audiences at the time of the films release. The special effects may not look like much by today's standards, but were groundbreaking in 1981. If you enjoy this film its worth watching the second documentary disc to see interviews with the director, cast, and special effects make up artists. If you like watching films where you want to laugh and cringe at the same time, watch this movie!

I saw this way back in the 80s. I totally forgot about the humor in the movie. This movie raised the bar for all monster transformations to follow.
Jack you should have stayed on the road.
