This has been an excellent book for my 6-year-old (Grade 1) son to read to me for our nightly reading before bed.
Many kids in his Grade 1 class are advancing to chapter books and he has been a bit behind that but doesn't want to read "baby books" (large picture books) any longer. I have tried a few types of books including the Magic Treehouse books with brother and sister characters Anna and Jack, but they couldn't keep his attention because they don't have pictures on the page. These Dragon books are perfect because they have pictures on every page, they are chapter books and they have a really catchy story. When we get to the end of a chapter he wants to keep reading because the story has grabbed him. As well, the words are simple enough that he can read 95% of them and then the other words that he hasn't learned he can mostly sound out with some support (words such as soldier, kingdom, through), so it keeps him feeling happy and confident that he is able to read chapter books.

This review is written by 8 year old Holly-

"What I liked about this book is there are not so many words on a page.

What I don’t like about the book was it was hard to remember the names of the many dragons.

The story was about this boy named drake he lived close to a king’s castle and one day a king’s knight came to drake and took him away to the castle but drake was curious why he needed to go to the castle. Then a wizard came with other dragon masters and you can figure out the rest from the story."

my kid loved it! She said it was exiting and there were lots of adventures.

Lots of fun! Has elements of Harry Potter, but at a super accessible level: Young Drake is removed from his humdrum life digging onions and swept away to the castle to become a Dragon Master.

Fantastic series! My 4 year old loves these books and can't get enough of them. We've read all four books in the series and he wants me to read them all over again.

My 8 year old son enjoyed this very much. We will read the rest of the series. I highly recommend the BRANCHES books from Scholastic, they have brought my son back from a steady decline in a desire to read.

In this illustrated, short chapter book for new readers, West manages to create a simple fantasy world without being simplistic, pandering, or too terribly cliché. It’s a fun adventure that should draw its audience in and carry them happily along to the series end.

A fully-illustrated early chapter book series filled with dragons, wizards, magic, and more!

The first short novel I could get my 7 year old son to read. I actually had to tell him to stop to do his homework. Like the previous posters said, please get the remaining books in the series!
