A young Kevin Spacey puts in a note worthy performance. He captures the character of a rather dull and awkward man, who matures really by necessity. I loved the cast of Judi Dench and Julianne Moore. This is a beautiful film shot about a small town and it's newspaper. Really a clever script that the entire cast brings to life!

VERY GOOD 2003 film - another fine Lasse Hallstrom effort with fine acting, cinematography (set in Newfoundland) and intriguing romantic growth plot.

An American movie, from an American book, ostensibly about Canada. I was scowling through most of it. Having Gordon Pinsent on hand was a bright spot. For a more serious look at the 10th province, take a look at "Republic of Doyle".

I'm sorry I wasted an evening being polluted by this ugly story.

Kevin Spacey is a good actor, but he's miscast in this superficial movie about finding yourself by returning to your roots, this time in rural Newfoundland. Spacey the actor radiates intelligence and self-confidence. Here he plays a downtrodden loser reminiscent of his deceptive role in The Usual Suspects, and I kept expecting him to reveal himself as the smartest guy on the Rock. Populated by stereotype oddballs in a cliche screenplay, the story is a weird mix of whimsey and serious, sometimes ugly, issues. The rugged scenery is nice, though.

One of my most favourite films!

A man finds a fresh start and redemption in his ancestral homeland: Newfoundland!

Favourite quote: "Tea's a strong drink. It will keep you going."

A truly Canadian film based on a truly Canadian book, I was moved by THE SHIPPING NEWS. I can't explain it. It feels deeply rooted in my soul, despite not being a Newfoundlander. THE SHIPPING NEWS is a father-daughter tale of sadness and rebirth. Julianne Moore's performance is incredible as the single mother of a challenged young son; Kevin Spacey is equally good as the father of an emotionally raw little girl. Judi Dench knocks it out of the park, which is just what Judi Dench does. THE SHIPPING NEWS is a thing to behold. That being said, I do understand why some people won't take to a film like this. It might feel too personal, too unique geographically, and thus not relateable. Regardless, it's a film about people and their growth, an emotionally driven tale. I don't think I would watch it again, but I truly enjoyed THE SHIPPING NEWS.

An interesting story, especially for genealogists. Be sure and watch bonus features. Filmed in multiple towns Lots of wind, rain & cold to film this movie. Interesting what can happen to ashes of someone who wrongs a sister.
Kept my interest in this 2002 movie. The library dashboard software is a great place to find these hidden treasures.

Good movie with a nice plot, nice scenery and enough out of the ordinary to pique the interest.

(To complement Sunnchilde's version) Billy: "It's finding the center of your story, the beating heart of it, that's what makes a reporter. You have to start by making up some headlines. You know, short, punchy, dramatic headlines. Now, have a look, what do you see? (Points at dark clouds on the horizon)... Tell me the headline." Quoyle: "Horizon Fills With Dark Clouds?" Billy: "Imminent Storm Threatens Village." Quoyle: "But what if no storm comes?" Billy: "Village Spared From Deadly Storm."

"Village spared from deadly storm."
