A raucous western comedy, is punctuated with a classic Lerner and Loewe musical score, including ?They Call the Wind Maria? and ?I Talk to the Trees.? The story of a gold mining boomtown full of brawny men centres on the work-and-play partnership of Ben and Pardner (Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood) and the delicate wife they share (Jean Seberg).

"They're singing Marge! Why aren't they killing each other?"-The Simpsons
Four star reviews? I'm wondering if I saw the same movie as the other commentators. A bloated and inane 1969 western musical comedy (You read that right.) which has the dream pairing of icons Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. Lee Marvin, who apparently was drunk much of the shoot, turned down "The Wild Bunch" for this. Jean Seberg, the star of "Breathless," is the woman they both love. The musical was in serious decline when this was made and, well, you kinda see why. Based on the Lerner and Loewe musical and directed by Joshua Logan, who also did "Camelot." It may be dumb, but at least it's nearly 3 hours long. "I talk to the trees."

As great as it ever was. The great scenery, story and music gave my spirits a lift this wet rainy week in the north west.

GREAT 1969 musical comedy western set in No Name City boom town during California gold rush. Fun to see Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood in all those costumes, hair, and hats kind of singing (Marvin mostly talking his songs).
I give very high marks for how they added all the cinematic possibilities in this film adaptation of a Broadway stage musical.
And there's some great songs, too. Yes, 'They Call The Wind Maria' - and the Rain is Tess and the Fire is Joe. And Pardner's actual name is Sylvester Newel (just one L).
Not sure how I've previously missed this terrific film. It really does incorporate all the advances in cinematography and film production possible in almost the 1970's. And I did read the two act synopsis of the Broadway production it's based on - so also very high marks for Paddy Chayefsky's film adaptation which significantly alters/improves the plot.

A sort of a lost gem. Maybe not a classic, but something you can see over again. And Clint Eastwood can sing! (Lee Marvin can't, but ...)

If you think Clint Eastwood only plays tough guys, you have to check this movie out. Lee Marvin wins a bride in a gold rush town and it causes tension when his partner, Clint Eastwood falls in love with her. They come up with an unorthodox solution. This is a musical with songs ranging from "Hand me down that can of beans" funny to "They call the wind Mariah" beautiful. This is a slightly raunchy but overall sweet and funny movie. When you've finished watching the movie, check out the soundtrack.
