Preston Sturges' manic screwball comedy, terribly risqué for the time, manages to poke fun at everything from sexist double standards and puritanical zeal to political opportunism when a young small-town woman has trouble remembering how she got pregnant. The laughs and innuendo come fast and furious but ultimately it's Eddie Bracken, playing the mother-to-be's perpetually bewildered wannabe boyfriend, who ends up running away with the show. The fact that it was originally condemned by the ironically named "Catholic League of Decency" is just icing on the cake.

What does a story about a young woman who goes out with a group of soldiers, gets drunk, and becomes pregnant suggest to you? If your first thought was "comedy!", you and I have something in common, but we are in the minority. There is certainly a lot of potential for crudity, or cruel judgement. But in the hands of genius Preston Sturges, the story is light-hearted, perceptive, loving -- even a little moving, while at the same time being raucously funny. Be prepared: Miracle goes further than you think they will go in a 1940s comedy. No; further than that.

GREAT fun forties 1944 whack humor film both written AND directed by Preston Sturges - one of the first to combine both those challenging roles.
Set in a small town which is having a going away party for it's soldier boys who are joining the military/going to war, the film has an oddball romantic plot - and lots of oddball humor.
Betty Hutton is terrific (natch) in lead female role as Trudy, and I also really enjoyed Diana Lynn as her younger sister, Emmie. First time I think I've seen him, but Eddie Bracken as Norval has almost Mickey Roonie-ish comedic talents in his lead male role. The girls' father character, single with deceased wife, is a cantankerous old guy who makes several unkind remarks about having daughters. At one time he calls his younger daughter Emmy 'ladder legs' - she's a bit thin and not as curvy as her older sister Trudy played by Betty Hutton.
Lots of fun writing gags like trying to remember her mystery wedding lost husband's name; Ratzki Watzki - or was it Zitzki Witzki? Another piece of the film's 'pitter patter' - a childless home is like a homeless child - not sure exactly what that means.
Apparently the Hays Office movie production code folks took exception to some of the, um, 'broad' humor, although the library Warner Brothers Archive Collection version did include a scene where one fellow tells another who does him a favor 'that's mighty white of you' - never heard that in a film before.
The dancing at the going away party is particularly good with terrific couple dancing - and fabulous ladies dresses, hats and heels.
The various law enforcement agencies (city, county, state, national) at the end competing to take legal control over Norval was another interesting twist.
I'll be checking out (ha,ha) more Preston Sturges (who got a 1944 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for this one) material.

HIGH-larious!!..What a fun, old movie - witty dialog & broad humor as timely today as ever; memorable characters with unique personalities as well as something to say about stereotypes in media. If you're interested in the industry's transition from silents to talkies/ vaudeville to film, Hollywood censorship - well, then you'll like this film & extras. Preston Sturges was quite a character and a formidable foe of the production code (think Hawkeye Pierce vs Maj. Frank Burns in M*A*S*H). Special shout outs to good ol' Uncle Charlie and 15yr old Diana Lynn.

Miracle of Morgan's Creek is a classic movie with a major flaw. Flaw is the lovable heroine enthusiastically engages in a one night stand that leads to pregnancy - done by a husband that disappears. Yet the heroine remains lovable and funny and admirably innocent. Only Preston Sturges could get away with turning a slutty young woman of the night into a role model lady of the dawn.
