Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins headline The Tin Star, a tough-minded character-driven western nominated for an Oscar. for its story and screenplay. Perkins plays Ben Owens, a greenhorn sheriff who hasn't worn his badge long... and who won't live to wear it much longer unless he gets some savvy help. Fonda, bringing to his role the presence and plain speaking that made him an icon of the cinematic West, plays wily bounty hunter Morg Hickman. "A decent man doesn't want to kill," Morg counsels Ben, "But if you're going to shoot, shoot to kill." Morg backs up his words with action. And when the time comes, so will Ben.

This is a 1957 American western directed by Anthony Mann.
It has become one of the best classics of the genre.
While the town's population openly abhors Hickman the bounty hunter, young sheriff Ben Owens admires the man for taking everything in stride and knowing how to handle dangerous situations.
When Owens learns Hickman was once a sheriff himself, he persuades Hickman to teach him the ways of a lawman, forcing Hickman to face his past and lost virtues.
This is an entertaining and heart-warming-at-the-end kind of film.
You would certainly love it.

Anthony Mann is best known for his series of westerns with James Stewart which brought a greater level of toughness and psychology to the genre. This later western stars Henry Fonda as a weary, cynical bounty hunter who reluctantly helps out a town's well-meaning, but inexperienced sheriff, played by Anthony Perkins. There are shades of "High Noon" when the town is too cowardly to protect prisoners from a lynch mob, but it's not as heavy handed. Look for Lee Van Cleef in a small role. Also see "Man of the West."
