This movie was made in 1976 and it is drenched with 1970s values - except as noted by the previous commenter noted Civil Rights values. I think the Peter Jackson movie is much, much better. But lovers of King Kong should definitely watch this film, if only to see who a different company handled the original story. And everyone should see the original 1933 production with its ground breaking special effects and great storyline. Also the special features by Peter Jackson's company on the new DVD of the 1933 production are excellent.

A pretty good, if unnecessary, remake of the classic that is a little cheesy, but better than the Peter Jackson version. It follows the basic storyline (Ape meets girl) and ends with Kong on the World Trade Center, which is eerie. Charles Grodin is good and smarmy, Jeff Bridges is always a welcome sight, and Jessica Lange, in her debut, is pretty, but a little bland and wouldn't make another movie for three years. The fx are dated, but Kong looks good. They spend too much time on the island and the natives are straight out of Edgar Rice Burroughs and you'd think the filmmakers would have been more sensitive in a post-Civil Right, post-Black Power era. And is Kong really about miscegenation?
