Nathanael West's novel about Hollywood decadence in the late '30s is a brilliant piece of filmmaking. A deeply insightful work that is powerful in its presentation, staggering in its vision. Director John Schlesinger is masterful in creating a world of platinum blondes, cockfights, glamour and broken dreams. And throughout, he plays on the edge of sexual and physical danger which finally erupts in the shocking climax. Oscar? nominations went to Burgess Meredith and cinematographer Conrad Hall.

A cult art house masterpiece by the legendary filmmaker John Schlesinger. A dark look into the underbelly of Hollywood in the late '30's with disturbing extraordinary performances by Donald Sutherland, Karen Black who claimed this movie ruined her career, the indomitable Burgess Meredith and a cameo by the wonderful underused Geraldine Page. This was the last big Hollywood picture made by Schlesinger and incidentally the biggest flop of 1975. Enjoy!

If you are a true nostalgic and cling possessively to your romantic illusions about the "glory days" of Hollywood back in the 1930s, then The Day Of The Locust is definitely not the flick for you._____ But if you want your eyes opened to the absolute vicious, dog-eat-dog reality of Tinseltown, then buckle up your seatbelts, folks, 'cause this one's gonna be a bumpy ride._____ Prior to its release back in 1975, I don't think that any other film had, up to that point, ever dared to reveal, so candidly, the sheer decadence of Hollywood behind-the scenes._____ If nothing else, this picture contains one of the most visually electrifying and brutally tragic final climaxes ever captured on film._____ *Trivia Note* - One of the main characters in The Day Of The Locust is named Homer Simpson. Yeah. That's right. Homer Simpson. I'll bet you that cartoonist Matt Groening got the name for his famous cartoon character from watching this film.
