Although the acting is mediocre, the arc of this movie covering 50 years of black civil and political rights struggle and the attitudes of the presidents (Truman to Reagan) in the White House is captivating. In this era of "Black Lives Matter", 'The Butler' reminds viewers that too little has changed for eliminating racial discrimination and poverty.

Wow. The times. And here we are still.
Real, intense, flawed and heroic human beings. People take many paths to do their best.

What a waste of time and celluloid. There wasn't anyone I liked or rooted for. I don't even want to waste time writing about it. Movie gets zero.

The times, whew. Memories are thick and many.

A single word: poignant. As to previous comments: akirakato sums it up very well. On the other hand, Byond has something of a point. It struck me right away that though what happened in the beginning clearly happened on many occasions, it was not in the span of this character's lifetime. It still has validity in showing a great deal of what has transpired in our nation's short history. I do not feel that it is appropriate to depict smoking, especially on TV, but also in movies. Unfortunately, yes it was pretty common, depicting it helps no one.

This is a 2013 docu-drama directed by Lee Daniels, loosely based on the real life of Eugene Allen.
Forest Whitaker plays as Cecil Gaines, an African-American who is a witness of notable political and social events of the 20th century during his 34-year tenure serving as a White House butler.
It is a gut-wrenching and emotionally affecting story of the eventful life of a long-serving White House butler.
Amusing are all-star supporting actors who play presidents or first ladies.

My own reaction was disappointment. If it was intended as propaganda it probably hit the mark. We're hooked early with the rape and murder, but those never happened. A very free approach to history turns this into a charmless Forrest Gump. Redeeming aspect: a chance to get a glimpse of the man himself, which I believe pays back the time required to attend to it:

Excellent movie! Amazing that all this happened during my lifetime. Social change bought with a price.

I really recommend this movie! Powerful story and acting. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

Cecil Gaines: America has always turned a blind eye to what we done to our own. We look out to the world and judge. We hear about the concentration camps but these camps went on for two hundred years right here in America.
