Nice to see a female hero with a great story, strong character and not dressed like a stripper. Heroes like these are too few in the mainstream comics. DeConnick did a great job re-inventing the character.

Carol Danvers has been Ms. Marvel, Binary, and many other names but in this new series she has taken on the mantle of Captain Marvel. She requires a bit of urging and her own way about feeling like she can take it but she certainly earns it and then some. The decision to take the name is one thing and keeping it ends up being quite another. It's a very gung ho, girl power, sort of story and it is pretty darn awesome.

The reboot of Captain Marvel brings us a truly empowered and unapologetic Carol Danvers, because why would you pretend to be less than what you really are? The first volume compiles Captain Marvel (2012) #1-6 in what is a self contained story that sets the tone for the character, starting with the realization that she more than deserves the mantle of the original Captain Marvel instead of being an adjunct ("Ms. Marvel"). This is a must read Marvel NOW! comic.

I give it the rating that I do more for the story than the art.

First volume of a new series headlined by Carol Danvers, taking her in a new direction. The art is somewhat inconsistent; there are multiple artists, and their styles lack the clean, clear look that I would prefer. That said, however, the art issues are more than compensated for by the pure strength of the writing. Kelly Sue DeConnick is a major emerging talent in the industry, and she shows here a strength for storytelling, and for characterization. She's spot on with how Carol relates to her fellow Avengers, and understands how to convey the transition into taking on the Captain Marvel mantle at last. She respects history, and she writes Carol with depth and strength. This is the kind of talent the comics industry should be nurturing.

I was hooked from the first page. Good art and even better writing. Captain Marvel is a fun read from start to finish!
