Everything was on point: music, camera work, actors, dialogue, scenery.

It's not often that I give a movie a 5-star rating. Even more rare when it's a movie that's 50 years old. The movie itself: 4.5 stars. Another .5 star for the total Criterion package. It's a superb all-round movie experience that's seldom duplicated.

Sometimes it all comes together for a movie--story, script, director, actors, cinematographer, too. More often through happenstance and inspiration rather than design. Such is the case with Klute.

What's even more remarkable: director Alan Pakula had only directed one modest feature film before, although he'd been behind the scenes on others, as producer. Then he does THIS one. The same is true for leads Jane Fonda; just one "serious" drama (They shoot Horses, Don't They?) released the year before she began work on Klute. Donald Sutherland: just one starring role in an "A" picture (MASH) the year before this one. Both performers are at the very beginning of their star ascendancy. Fonda is particularly stunning in her portrayal of Bree Daniels.

The film was very "current" when released in 1971, which means the odds are it would dated by 2020. Not so. It is a perfect periodpiece--true to the time in look, feel, and attitude, but so excellent it plays like a contemporary 21st century feature film. That's rare.

The Special Features include three documentaries on the making of the film and the film-makers themselves, and, in addition, a new interview with Jane Fonda. Watching this interview, you realize the woman has lost none of her artistic excellence--what a fabulous communicator--it's one of the best interviews I've seen. She appears to be coasting now--at age 82, she deserves to--but there may be one or two really artistic achievements to come...

A classic thriller from the 70-s.

Good 70's movie. Conspiracy of forces and unresolved nihilistic themes. I was not really a fan of Jane Fonda, but this movie gets an extra star for Jane in a zip up leather suite.

I liked this movie. It is too violent and sexual for children. It moves a quick pace. It keeps your interest.

Suspenseful story, gritty background and a great performance by Jane Fonda. A classic detective film.

This is a near perfect detective/suspense film, only the second film directed by Alan Pakula who would go on to direct The Parallax View, All the President’s Men and Sophie’s Choice. The film utilizes the fact that we get to listen to Bree’s (Jane Fonda) sessions with her psychiatrist to explain the motivations in Bree’s chosen profession. This technique would later be used in the Sopranos to help explore the emotions surrounding Tony Soprano. Fonda won an Oscar for best actress as she portrays the gamut of emotions of domination to vulnerability, and the gamut from complete (or feigned ) confidence to complete fear.

Jane Fonda received an Oscar for her performance in "Klute". Donald Sutherland has one of his best film performances as well. I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. There is really suspenseful moments in "Klute". If you want an Academy Award winning Jane Fonda movie, then this is going to be a great film for you!

An ok movie that suffers from needlessly long shots where by today's standards not much happens. I was constantly hitting FFWRD. The sound editors didn't quite understand how to use room tone properly back then. But fun to watch a young Fonda and Sutherland. These are actors that knew how to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Considering the times, interesting sound track.

easy to see why fonda got the oscar. sutherland gives a great and sometimes touching performance as the detective who doggedly pursues clues to the disappearance of his friend.
