Gainsbourg

This is about a self-proclaimed ugly Frenchman that was artistically talented enough to bed a bunch of beautiful women. The first half hour was interesting but then it just turns into a list of his sexual conquests. I lost interest by the hour mark and turned it off after another 15 minutes as it seemed to be a bunch repetitive seductions. If the last hour turned into more about the man than his sexual exploits, I don't know and don't care.

A real tour-de-force film! Original and imaginative, depicting the life of a prolific artiste who was the French version of Bob Dylan/Jim Morrison.

Bravo!

Admittedly a huge fan of all things Gainsbourg (daughter/father; music/film) - I very much enjoyed this movie which presented the essence of Serge - both his genius & the frustrations of the people attempting relationships near his fire. Sfar's contribution gives the movie a Dali-esque vibe that suits the subject. And of course - the music is fantastic. I haven't read the graphic novel, but will now.

Interesting filmmaking from graphic novelist Joann Sfar, with a brilliant performance by Eric Elmosnino and a fine period recreation of the Gainsbourg's heyday in 60s France.

Definitely had a comic book feel to it, very surreal and abstract at times. Didn't love it, but it's pretty to look at.

I viewed a dvd from another system of the movied "Slogan" on the set of which Gainsbourg met Jane Birkin. They became lovers and had a child, much like the movie, but apart from its 60s style interest, that was a lesser movie. To my surprise "Gainsbourg" had interspersed surreal moments (I won't spoil what they are) which I actually quite liked. I'm no fan of
Serge, but this movie gave me better insight into him than
"Slogan" plus one of his CDs did. Warning! The last reel is pretty dark, but that was his life. There is also some nudity and sex but then that's a norm for French movies.

Wouldn't say I loved this film but I appreciated the director's creative approach. It's based on a graphic novel which explains a lot. It also probably helps if you're already pretty familiar with Gainsbourg.
