After reading the Forty Dreams of St John Bosco recently, I was thrilled to see that this movie was available at the library. I'm now grateful that I could check it out and return it, because I would not choose to own it. There is much that is effective in it, and it can be quite moving. But it's a modern movie--however much they might draw water up from the well and knead their bread by hand. It's a modern Catholic's idea of what Don Bosco should have been. We saw into the mind of the filmmakers, not into the mind of a saint--which, I suppose, I should have expected. There are, for example, only two small references to his mystical side, and they are so poorly developed that they'd likely slip right past anyone who hadn't read about him first. It makes me sad to think of what an opportunity was missed in spending such great amounts of energy in making such a film.
