After spending the summer with her artist grandmother, Trisha knows she wants to be an artist, too. She's thrilled when her sketches get her into Miss Chew's special art class at the high school. A substitute teacher tells her she's wasting time on art when she should be studying - but fortunately, this is one battle that Miss Chew and Trisha are up for!

This true story shows just how important a teacher can be in a child's life - and celebrates the power of art itself.

Patricia Polacco has always found a way to speak right to the heart in her tales and this book is no different. Drawing from her own personal experience, a community of teachers supports her talent for art and helps her with failing tests by giving her more time and understanding the way she reads is different. Not through judgement or criticism, Trisha/Theresa manages to thrive. But not all teachers hold the same beliefs and one in particular threatens to destroy all Patricia loves and has achieved. These are the realities of the school system today as well and we should be lucky to have our children surrounding by a community of professionals that have their best interest at heart.

I love Polacco! JH
