Great series if you love history!
Oliver (the host) is Scottish and I believe an archaeologist / historian / author (SPL has several of his books). It is big (long) - 5 discs with 10 episodes an hour each (pace yourself). He starts at 84 AD and ends about 2008 and talks of the home rule issue. The battle with the English is a persistent theme. I enjoyed the episodes about the Hammer of the Scots (King Edward I) / William Wallace (the Braveheart guy and national hero) / Robert the Bruce. Also interesting was the episode of the Picts and the Gaels and the loss of the Gaelic language. Oliver the narrator is Scottish, but the accent isn't cumbersome. At one point he talking about the poor which sounds like poo-er coming from him. The series is mainly talk and Oliver walking around Scotland. Lovely scenery, the cameramen get carried away with the eyeball close-up. And there is an unfortunate display of bad British teeth on just about every expert they interview (think I was just getting a bit bored during certain episodes.) Overall the series is outstanding and Scottish history is indeed fascinating.

Mostly this is a history of the rulers of Scotland. You learn very little about the Scottish people until the last two episodes (which are the series best). The scenery is nice and you get to see a lot of it, but there's very little discussion about the things you see.
