There have been times, and quite a few, that I have questioned the validity of time that I have wasted in my life but never to the heightened extent as during the entire time of this longggg, beleaguered movie. Morbid, crestfallen, deflating, depressing, slow, dragging confetti ridden script. I don't want to think about it. What kind of people call this 'entertainment'?

This is a difficult movie to watch, but incredibly well done. The boy playing Oskar does an amazing job of capturing a young boy on the spectrum who is experiencing a traumatic event, and the audience views it for the most part through his eyes. I have a son with Asperger's, and it would be absolutely bewildering to someone like him to experience the loss of a parent in 9/11, or any other tragic event. The boy is not "mean" or "hateful" as some reviewers have said, but struggles with the ability to express appropriate emotions and empathy, as is usually characteristic of children on the spectrum. Definitely worth watching.

Okay, so I haven't read the book (didn't even know there was a book) but there's something to be said about a movie that takes me over a week to watch it because of how slow paced and boring it is. I found it odd that the opening credits basically didn't exist other than the title of the movie and it was only after watching it for a while that I realized that Sandra Bullock was in it as well. Perhaps if I had read the novel beforehand, I would have enjoyed this movie more, but as it is, I thought it was painfully slow and not much humor at all. I know it's supposed to be an emotional film but films such as those are supposed to make you feel for the characters. I felt nothing.

Super well written, smart, touching, funny, charming, deep and heart-felt. I can't believe I missed this one. I think the title threw me off, but I cannot recommend it enough. Sometimes I find Hanks a little off-putting- a bit smarmy and over-done, but he is perfect in this smaller role. There are a series intersting characters that you will not easily forget including 'The Renter' who does not speak, the grandma who speaks on walkie-talkies with her grandson from a neighbouring apartment building. This was an Academy Award Best Picture nominee in 2011.

I guess most of the reviewers here must LOVE the Lifetime Movie Network, because that's what this film reminded me of. If you sit through the whole thing, and that's asking a lot, you'll get a neat wrap-up at the ending, where the mean little kid finally realizes that other people have feelings too, swings on a swing set like daddy wanted him to, and finds out that mommy really loves him. This movie exploits the events of 9/11 to try to evoke emotions because the actual script is so bad.

Fantastic movie, I saw it in the theatre several years ago and thought it was worth another watch. It certainly was! Loved this movie. Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, Viola Davis, John Goodman, Max von Sydow and the star (to me anyway) Thomas Horn! And many more. What a cast!

An all too familiar subject yet slightly different view from the perspective of a young boy with an anxiety disorder as he works through the grief and anxiety of losing his father. Although a sad topic, we see the boy grow in ways that help both him and his mother deal with their loss.

Loved this film and its impact on New Yorkers. The quiet suffering was in display here

Excellent movie. The boy captured the nuances and mannerisms of a child with sensory processing disorder and anxieties beautifully. This wasn't a happy cheerful movie but very uplifting regardless.

Other: Excellent multifaceted story that infuses ongoing childhood anxiety with current life trauma (9-11) together with a link to the intergenerational transmission of traumatic fear to the child. Intensely complex but deeply interesting and moving.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: This film involved the tragedy of 9/11 as a heavy continuous theme. Scenes are shown and may be incredibly frightening or intense for some with a sensitivity to it.
