Interesting, in that this accomplished explorer, soldier, surveyor, and follower of guru Madam Blavatsky, believed his grown son was destined to be a holy-man, taking him into the Amazon to meet up with the inhabitants of a great lost city, perhaps Atlantis. This intriguing idea of Atlantis being located in Ecuador is further expounded upon in James Rollins's book, "The Bone Labyrinth." Further, Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, joined an expedition there in 1976 in search of the "Metal Library," which they did not find.
