Can't beat the entertaining and the energetic performances in this musical drama about a group of Performing Arts High Schoolers from the diverse socio-economic and cultural background of NYC. 1980 Academy Award winner for Best Music AND Original Song ("Fame" performed by Irene Cara,) plus 4 other nominations.

Notes: Spin-offs but all about the lives of students at New York's High School For The Performing Arts as they navigate their way through the highs and lows:

I wanted to see this movie because I love dance and musicals; and this one is very well known. I liked the dancing and there was a good musical number (or two) but overall it was an OK movie. Some storylines were more interesting than others, and they had many different characters that some I didn't even like or care about as the movie went on.

All these negative comments are obviously from people who have no actual experience in the performing arts. This film is so true to life. A lot of stories, personal stories, are left with no conclusion! I, myself, studied for years privately as an opera singer and a week before my audition for the Metropolitan Opera in New York, I withdrew. Not for lack of confidence or any other reason one might expect - it was for, and as cliché as it might sound, for love. The person I fell in love with had no appreciation for the arts. Classical music, opera, ballet, etc. So, there I was and made my choice. I've never regretted my choice, but continue singing to this day and continue enjoying the arts I love. I shared 22 great yrs with that person I gave up a possible promising career for and we raise a wonderful son in that time as well.

Not sure why this became such a phenomenon back in the day. There are two good music/dance montages but the rest is pretty boring and uneventful. Seeing it on stage would probably have been kewl!

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

This movie tries to addess a number of interesting issues, but fails. Fame is a mishmash of stories with potential; however, the plotline is not strong enough to carry them all, and nothing gets concluded in the end.

The standup:

I live in the South Bronx.
That's the country just north of Harlem and west of Puerto Rico.
It's a very tough neighborhood.
The dogs carry knives.
Did you ever see a baby with a zip gun?
You gotta have friends. You can't alienate anybody up there. Nobody.
Black people, white people, Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, cockroaches.
You gotta respect cockroaches. They got a good union.
Last week, 15,000 marched down my block demanding better housing.
But I love the South Bronx. Everywhere you go from there is up.
Everybody has dreams in the South Bronx. I had dreams.
Stop your average boy on a South Bronx street... and ask him what he wants to be.
"I want to be an ex-junkie, man. "
You can see them every day.
You can't drive because of the dreams on the streets being seen by cokeheads.
The minute that white line's laid down the street, you got somebody going.
It's true.
And then there is sex.
Oh, yeah.
Kids are into sex earlier in South Bronx.
Like about 6 a.m.

56 quotes in IMDb, thanks!! This one is very funny:
Lisa Monroe: I love your coat. I saw that in Bendel's window.
Hilary van Doren: My stepmother bought it for me.
Lisa Monroe: Really? I wouldn't mind that kind of step mother.
Hilary van Doren: She didn't do it for me. She wants my father to think she cares. Besides, she loves shopping. She gets multiple orgasms every time she buys something.
Lisa Monroe: Sounds great! I think I like her.
Hilary van Doren: You can have her.
